About Your Hosts
Kaitlin Simpson
Executive Producer and Co-Host
Kaitlin is a historian of the 20th century United States in a global context. Her research focuses on gender, race, agriculture, and the environment in the US South and the transnational connections that link the rural South to a broader global community. Kaitlin’s dissertation analyzes the globalization of the cut flower industry in the late-20th century. In particular, she looks at the exportation of the North American cut flower industry to Colombia and Ecuador and how ideas of gender shaped both the growth of the South American floriculture industry and American reactions to this globalization process.

Alyssa is a historian of modern Germany, whose research focuses on the intersections of science, medicine, and local tradition. Her dissertation, “Death, Tradition, and the Making of the Modern Morgue in Rural Bavaria, 1855-1914,” investigates how nineteenth-century Bavarians’ cultural and social understandings of death, burial, and the corpse changed with the establishment of the morgue. Alyssa examines these institutional developments and explores the impact of medical and state intervention on German culture and identity.
