About
   The Show

"Just add women and stir." This is a common phrase within the historical community that helps to describe how many historians choose to incorporate women and gender into their historical works. Throw in a few important women, sprinkle in the word "masculinity," give it all a good stir, and call your gendered analysis done.

In contrast, our podcast Add Men and Stir takes the idea of women and gender in history seriously. We read and discuss historical works by women and about women to see how gender has shaped the human experience and helped to create the world we live in today.

In our third season, titled “Formidable Women,” we will profile some famous and not-so-famous women throughout history who, in their lives, wielded a lot of power. But we are not just talking about political power, although some of these women held high political positions. We will discuss women who became important cultural symbols for their time, who fought for causes they believed in, or whose lives have changed the world in which they lived.

Also check out our first season, entitled "Bodies of Water: Gender, Health, and Healing in the Atlantic World," where we look at how scholars of the Atlantic World incorporate gender, medicine, and the body into their works. And our second season, "Queens of Crime," we bring you the story of women throughout history who either perpetrated or were the victims of crime.
